Trend Bible attend the leading home and interiors trade shows globally to evidence and document emerging trends within this sector. This month Senior Trend Strategist, Helen Jamieson, travelled to Chicago to attend the International Home and Housewares Show 2018.

Each year at the show the focus on ‘Smart Home’ grows. This year saw a specific exhibition space showcasing start-ups in the sector and there were numerous presentations being delivered on smart tech and the connected kitchen. We believe the challenge for brands and manufacturers is knowing when ‘connected’ or ‘smart’ functionality is right for product, or when it simply adds complexity that householders find overwhelming.

We continued to see the emergence of natural materials such as bamboo, stainless steel and ceramics in response to the emerging consumer mindset where environmental and toxicity issues around some plastics are becoming more of a conscious concern.

Other Highlights:

  • In terms of colour, it was clear that PANTONE’s colour of the year, Ultra Violet, had a big influence, with many manufacturers using purple to update their product ranges.
  • It was also evident that US buyers were specifically looking for products that are ‘made in the USA’, a clear indication of consumer mood.

In our IH+HS Chicago 2018 Trade Show Report we share the most important trends that retailers should respond to right now. This report is broken down into five sections covering trends for Print & Pattern, Material & Finish, Shape & Construction, Functionality and Colour.
