Celebrating 100 years of Bauhaus, this cheerful trend champions insatiable curiosity and creativity. Reflecting the ‘design for all’ mentality of the Bauhaus, this story sees children’s interiors take on an experimental and theatrical approach, sparking fun and imagination in design.

Published 2 years ago in our Autumn Winter 2019/20 Baby & Kids Lifestyle Trend Book, we can now evidence Art Haus in major UK and US stores. In this post, we explore how this trend has been interpreted in store.

Inspired by both art sculptures and the topsy-turvy, statement costumes of Bauhaus parties; stacked shapes appear across multiple product categories. Featuring in both high end and value retailers, abstract placement prints bring a playful edge to everyday objects, stacked toy forms create quirky characters and edges and angles influence lighting design at ABC Home, with precariously balanced lampshades.

This playful palette celebrates colour, with a spectrum of shades to reflect art school paint pots. Deeper navy blue grounds the palette and adds a level of sophistication. Splashes of primary brights are mixed in creating colourful combinations and bold clashes. Paperchase apply clashing colour combinations on stationery products, whilst tubular metal bedframes at Cukooland are powder coated in bright yellow.

Creative and fun design is central to this trend, celebrated across Crate & Barrel, HAY and Vertbaudet through shape and motif with painted colour blocks, suspended shape installations and characters dressed in flamboyant outfits. Pop-up play booths allow children to get lost in their imaginations, a theatrical approach encouraging expression and interactive play, as featured at JoJo Maman Bebe.
