5 Packaging Trends Design Managers will Love for 2026

For 2026, consumers are purchasing with intention and elevating their daily routines and rituals at home. At the same time, brands are under increased pressure to keep waste and costs down.

Coupling these factors together, we’ve seen Design Managers get creative in their outputs, as they balance innovation with longevity, durability and practicality.

Here, we reflect on the trends we forecasted in our 2026 Packaging Design Direction report. Delving into 5 of the key design trends, we explore material choices, colour and typography which we have loved for 2026.

1. Design for Display

Scrutiny around single-use packaging has continued to intensify this year, and refillable and reusable packaging has gained even more momentum.

For designers, the focus has shifted on creating sustainable packaging which enhances everyday rituals.  Material choices have moved towards more elemental options that signal longevity and value.  Think ceramics, terracotta and cork.

This sophisticated approach champions the durability and perceived luxury of the packaging, designed for displaying proudly in the consumer’s home.

2. Mid Tone Mattes

1970s-style sepia-infused colour palettes and ultra-matte finishes offer a bold but grounded look for 2026.

Designers are focusing on pairing de-saturated brightswith earthy shades, browns and citric greens for example. This creates contrast without overwhelm.

Simple designs still feel fresh by keeping packaging designs clean and intentional, and letting colour and typography take the lead. Bold sans-serif fonts work well here, adding to a distinctly graphic nature, with sharp typefaces and clean lines.

3. Auras and Transparency

Ombre has evolved for 2026, with softer, aura-like effects. Hazy outlines and airbrushed circles provide a new take on the gradient patterns of previous seasons, working across matte paper packaging, milky-coloured plastics and gently tinted glass.

Material plays a big part here. Designers are using translucent glass, resin and bioplastics to play with opacity. This gives beauty and cleaning products an ethereal yet subtle ombre look, creating packaging that feels modern, light and ethereal whilst still being commercially viable.

In 2026, consumers are stripping back the noise and enjoying intentional simplicity at homeThis has opened a creative opportunity for designer to heighten at-home rituals, whether it be unboxing deliveries, or recycling the packaging.

Mono-material packages and embossing or debossing add an elevated yet practical touch to beauty and food packaging, which is still easy to recycle.

Meanwhile phrases on cardboard tear strips help to build quiet suspense during the unboxing experience. Satisfying press-stud poppers create both a joyful opening sensation and also a secure transit for products.

5. Layered Stickers & Scrapbook Effects

Cut-out, layered and collaged effects add a youthful feel for packaging in 2026.

As customisation gains importance, packaging design takes cues from scrapbooking techniques and journaling. We’re seeing curated stickers, patches and charm for a kitsch aesthetic being incorporated.

Materials and base colours remain rudimentary, using kraft paper, matte plastic, aluminium foils or transparent glass to contrast against brightly coloured, fun stickers and pop-coloured branding.

Brands are offering paper or matte stickers for easy recyclability, or ensuring coated or glossy stickers can easily peel off for reuse.
