As evidenced in our 2017 Festive Retail Report, all things bright are celebrated this festive season, taking influence from a blend of Central and South American countries. A carnival spirit was embraced across more stores than ever as summer’s tropical vibe carries through into the festive season, with the widest product offering yet. Multi-coloured ornaments, pom pom garlands and cacti define this trend. However, llamas were the key character across print and product, with playful puns on greetings and quirky hanging decorations.

Whilst the unicorn hasn’t gone away, we have seen llamas move into the spotlight. Offering a more playful and cuddly alternative, the South American camelids are quickly becoming a must-have animal adornment.
The Instagram account ‘Llamawithnodrama‘ is gaining traction with over 100,000 followers. Founder Eylül Savaş created the initiative, Llama With No Drama, in April 2016 as a reaction to all of the world’s drama. The project aims to give people a break from their daily worries, get out of their comfort zone and bring a smile to their face. There is also an emerging wedding trend stemming from the US, where couples rent therapy llamas to add a one-of-a-kind, interactive element to their special day.
In a time of political unrest, there is a desire for fun and light heartedness amongst consumers. This is reflected in the rise of alternative, vibrant Christmas accessories. John Lewis have dedicated a whole range to llamas this year, with their ‘Lima Llama’ Christmas line. Filled with crocheted textiles, traditional Peruvian patterns, multicoloured pom pom garlands and llama motifs, the line claims to ‘put the festival in festive.’
With the llama said to be arriving as a new emoji in 2018, according to Unicode’s President Mark Davis, we expect to see more from them in the coming months.
