In addition to forecasting, we continually monitor and track how major retailers across the UK and USA are responding to in-season trends for key occasions. Halloween remains a key commercial occasion for retailers with overall spending expected to reach $9 billion in 2019. Here we share our round up of the key highlights for Halloween 2019:

What are consumers searching for?

  • ‘Pastel Halloween’ searches are up 385% on Pinterest since 2018
  • Searches for ‘Boho Halloween’ decor has seen a 68% rise in 2019
  • Stranger Things continues to provide rich inspiration for party decor (up 549%) and costume (up 538%)

Spells, Brews and Potions

The witch remains the most popular costume choice for adults in 2019 so it’s no surprise to see spell books, brews and potions as key decorative accessories across stores in the UK and US. Witching props and spell books have an aged and distressed feel at Fenwick and TK Maxx and apothecary bottles at Walmart are tarnished and weathered.

Dressed up Animals

The National Retail Federation estimates that 29 million pet lovers will dress their pets up this Halloween, with the pumpkin being the top costume of choice. Taking inspiration from our fur-babies, friendly, dressed up animals were a key character update spotted across plush toys, serveware and greetings cards. This is a great opportunity for licensed products.

Halloween Puns

The gift and greetings industry borrow inspiration from fashion retailers to tap into Millennial culture. Tongue in cheek puns such as ‘Drink up Witches’ and ‘Let’s Get Batty’ update playful alcohol packaging and partyware.
