What is a Fad?

A fad is a product, activity or interest that is very popular for a short period of time. Fads arise rapidly, and can even achieve global reach, but then vanish just as fast. Fads can be commercially lucrative but are hard to predict. The rapid emergence of seemingly random products such as the ‘fidget toy’ or the unicorn motif can all be linked back to broader social and cultural shifts.
