Colour Direction 2021 | 4 Key Colour Palettes for Autumn Winter

Written by Justine Jackson

1 November 2020

The home, and everything we seek to bring into it, becomes an opportunity for either soothing and healing or prompting joyful emotions. We use colour to shape our environments to deliver specific experiences, whether that is to calm us and make us feel safe or to inspire and delight our senses.

No colour works in total isolation. Our 2021 Colour Direction outlines six shades which have been carefully selected to work with coordinating colours which we have mapped out across seasonal palettes to show how they can be used. In this post, we share our four key colour palettes for Autumn Winter 2021/22 across both Home and Interiors and Baby and Kids industries.

Home & Interiors

Palace Blue PANTONE 18-4043 TCX

A desire for bolder decor schemes inspires hyper-real colour palettes with emphasis on electric blue shades. Consumers are experimenting with edgy and bold colour combinations. Mix Palace Blue with berry pink and soft fuschia. Consider high-shine metallics and ultra-matt finishes to radiate a galactic 1980’s feel.

Frosty Green PANTONE 15-5706 TCX

Frosty green paired with rich caramels and tan shades creates a true retro vibe for the winter season. Introduce Jaffa Orange for a nostalgic pop, capturing the playful and optimistic spirit of the 1970s. Maroon adds depth to the palette, acting as a softer option to black, creating a sophisticated atmosphere for a night of entertaining.

Baby & Kids

Easter Egg Blue PANTONE 16-3925 TCX

Following a lack of focus on creativity within children’s education in recent years, we see an increase in fantasy and escapist themes for children within the Baby & Kids market.

Theatrical, futuristic spaces provide the backdrop for bold stripes and colour blocking. Easter Egg is a key shade in balancing escapist themes with minimalist design. Colour is applied in a high gloss finish to ceramics and wooden furniture. Chalky purples and powdery pinks are painted onto metals and mirrored in pastel substrates creating playful optical illusions.

Shale Green PANTONE  16-6116 TCX

Over the winter months the idea of ‘living thoughtfully’ has particular significance as the home provides the perfect setting to build deep connections as families come together to play, share stories and live sustainable, wholesome lives.

This focus on conscious consumerism paves the way for Shale Green, a soft, misty shade of green which reflects modesty. Once again colour is driven by natural, vegan-friendly dyes. Board games incorporate simple wooden figures and painted shapes in muted neutral tones. Rich browns and earthy greys are speckled through recycled terrazzo and woven through organic cottons.
